By Jones Gadama
Heavy rainfall in Phalombe district has caused the Thuchira River to overflow, displacing dozens of families from their homes.
The affected families, who are from Group Village Headman Nkanda, have sought refuge at Sangale Primary School in Group Village Headman Sabuni.
According to Jonathan Namale, one of the community leaders in the affected areas, the flooding water entered into the houses of the affected families, causing them to flee in terror. “The flooding water entered into their houses, so this terrified them,” said Namale.

At least 70 families from Jailosi, Nthokole, Magereta, Sabuni, and Sekenawo villages are the most affected ones, with many of them losing their homes and belongings.
The situation is dire, with many families in need of basic necessities like food, shelter, and clothing.
The flooding in Phalombe comes as weather experts forecast that the southern region of Malawi will be affected by Cyclone Jude from Monday to Thursday.
The cyclone is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds, which could exacerbate the flooding situation in Phalombe.
“We are worried that the situation may worsen with the coming of Cyclone Jude,” said Namale.
“We urge the government and other stakeholders to provide assistance to the affected families as soon as possible, ” He added
The government has been urged to provide emergency assistance to the affected families, including food, shelter, and clothing.
The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has been alerted to the situation and is expected to provide support to the affected communities.
In the meantime, the affected families are struggling to come to terms with their new reality.
Many have lost their homes and belongings, and are in need of basic necessities.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is essential that the government and other stakeholders take proactive measures to mitigate the effects of the flooding and provide support to affected communities.
The people of Phalombe are in need of assistance, and it is imperative that help arrives as soon as possible.
