Nkula power station back online after successful maintenance works

Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has successfully completed the maintenance works at Nkula Power Station, bringing the facility back online after a brief shutdown during the Easter holidays.

The maintenance works, which commenced at 22:00 hours on Thursday, 17 April 2025, involved a series of critical repairs and upgrades aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the power station.

According to EGENCO, the works included demolishing a wall of concrete piles at Nkula A intake that was affecting power generation operations, maintenance of a bypass valve on machine number 4 at Nkula B powerhouse, and general preventive maintenance on power generation machines and other associated parts.



The decision to undertake these maintenance works was a strategic one, aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the power station.

By addressing the issues affecting power generation operations, EGENCO is confident that the facility will be able to operate at optimal levels, providing a stable and reliable supply of electricity to the national grid.

As of 17:36 hours on Monday, 21st April 2025, the first machine at Nkula Power Station was brought back online, with others following suit immediately.

At the time of writing, 6 of the 8 machines at the power station were back online, with work ongoing to bring the remaining machines online.
