KCH laundry attendant, 33, arrested over syringes, urinal bags theft

Police at Area 33 in Lilongwe have arrested Feston Mphonde, 33, for allegedly stealing 300 pieces of medical syringes, and 30 urinal bags at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

Speaking with 247 Malawi News Lilongwe police officer Inspector Hestings Chigalu,says the suspect who works as a laundry attendant at the said referral hospital, was assigned to work as a gas cylinder wheeler on this day at around 19:30 hours.


Chigalu added that after taking oxygen cylinders to ward 4A for females, and noticing that nurses were away attending to patients in other wards, the suspect entered into a treating room within the same ward, where he stole the said medical equipments.

However, he was stopped by security guards while exiting the ward. Upon searching the laptop bag he was carrying on his back, this is when the syringes and the urinal bags were discovered.

He was immediately handed over to Area 33 Police Unit at the KCH, before being taken to Area 3, Lilongwe, where is currently being held.

The suspect will appear in court soon to answer a case of Theft by Public Servant.

Feston Mphonde hails from Mphonde Village, Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe District.
