Malawian Referees Make International Debut in CAF Assignments

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed three Malawian referees to officiate in the 2026 Women’s African Cup of Nations qualifying matches. This historic appointment marks a significant milestone in Malawi’s football development, demonstrating CAF’s confidence in the country’s match officials.
Bernadettar Kwimbira and Eness Gumbo are set to make their international debut as first assistant referee and fourth official, respectively, in the match between Burkina Faso and Burundi. The match is scheduled to take place on February 26, 2025, at Stade 26 Mars in Bamako, Mali.

In a related development, Martha Nyekanyeka has been appointed as referee’s assessor for the match between Tanzania and Equatorial Guinea. The match will be played on February 20, 2025, at Azam Complex Stadium in Der Es Salaam, Tanzania.
FAM Referees Manager Duncan Lengani expressed his pride and confidence in the appointed referees. “The appointments of Malawian referees to officiate international matches is a milestone for the country’s football development. It demonstrates CAF’s confidence in our match officials and growing recognition of Malawian referees,” said Lengani.
