DPP making strides in Mulanje Central Constituency, Voters Warn Against Imposed Candidates
By Flocy Katumbu
In a comprehensive research study conducted by the Horizon Political Research Initiative, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has emerged as the leading political force in Mulanje Central Constituency.
The research, which focused on the political landscape in the area, revealed that if elections were held between April and July, DPP’s Jones Gadama would win with a significant 70% of the vote.
The study, which employed quantitative, qualitative, and comparative analysis methodologies, also found that Damson Chelewani would come in second with 10%, followed by Kondwani Nankhumwa of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 8%. Rhoda Gadama Misomali and Mphatso Gadama would trail behind with 3% and 1%, respectively. Notably, 8% of voters remained undecided.
In terms of presidential preferences, the research found that DPP’s Peter Mutharika would garner a massive 90% of the vote, while Lazarus Chakwera, Kondwani Nankhumwa, UTM, and UDF would trail behind with 3%, 1%, 2%, and 6%, respectively.
Dr. Aoja Koyakoya Nakhodza, Executive Director of Horizon Political Research Initiative, emphasized that the organization has a proven track record of conducting accurate research globally.
He attributed the DPP’s popularity in Mulanje Central Constituency to the voters’ discontent with the current economic challenges under the Chakwera administration.
The research also revealed that Jones Gadama, the preferred DPP shadow MP for Mulanje, has won the hearts of many in the constituency, including elderly people.
Interestingly, the study found that the three Gadamas (Jones, Rhoda, and Mphatso) are not related, except for Rhoda and Mphatso, who share the same parents.
However, the research also established that voters in Mulanje Central Constituency will not allow their party to impose candidates on them.
One of the interviewees, Ellaton Magalasi, cautioned the DPP, saying, “Mulanje Central Constituency is a hive for DPP, and we know our leaders.
We will not allow the party to impose any candidate on us; we have our own here.”
This warning shot from the voters underscores the importance of grassroots engagement and participatory democracy.
The DPP and other political parties must take heed of this warning and ensure that candidate selection processes are inclusive and reflective of the people’s will.
The findings of this research provide valuable insights into the political dynamics in Mulanje Central Constituency, highlighting the DPP’s strong foothold in the area.
However, the warning from voters against imposed candidates also serves as a reminder that political parties must prioritize the people’s interests and aspirations.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these findings will impact future elections.
One thing is certain, however – the people of Mulanje Central Constituency will not be taken for granted, and their voices will be heard loud and clear.
