By Chisomo Phiri

A 25-year-old Matrida Kankhosi will spend the next 1.8 years in jail for scalding her boyfriend’s wife at Sankhani Village, Traditional Authority(TA) Njewa in Lilongwe.

Kankhosi has also been ordered to a pay compensation of K100 000 to the victim.

Lilongwe Police Prosecutor Sub Inspector Maggie Kayaka told the court on Wednesday that the victim, Evelyn Ganizani, 26, is married to Gift Phiri (convict’s boyfriend), since 2016.

It is reported that in July this year the victim temporarily left home for her parents’ place where she spent some days.

“It was this time that rumours started to reach her that back home, her husband was spending nights with another woman right in their matrimonial house,”said Kayaka.

She cut short her stay and secretly returned home during odd hours. She found her husband in the company of the convict (Matrida).

A fight ensued between the two ladies and the convict rushed to the pot that had boiling water. She poured on the victim’s entire body.

According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu, the husband advised the convict to quickly flee the scene.

In court, Matrida pleaded guilty to the charge of an Act intended to Cause Grievous Harm but prayed for leniency.

However, Kayaka asked the court to slap the convict with a deserving punishment; saying the victim is still nursing scald wounds as a result of her actions.

First Grade Magistrate Chakaka Nyirenda, concurred with the state, and observed that the offence committed is serious in nature.

Matrida Kankhosi hails from Kandama Village, Traditional Authority Njewa in Lilongwe District.
