The government of Japan has donated over 2 billion Kwacha to Malawi government to help in the works of combating climate change and promoting peace.
The funds have been directed to the United Nations Development Program in Malawi.
In an interview with Local media on Friday, Youichi Oya Japanese Ambassador to Malawi said the funds will among other important things help in the implementation of projects towards mitigation of negative effects that come due to climate change and promoting Peace, Socio-Economic Empowerment through the establishment of National Peace Architecture.
Shigeki Komatsubara Resident Representative for UNDP said the funds will go a long in assisting them for the two projects especially on climate change in the aftermath of cyclone Freddy to become successful.
On his part, Michael Usi Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change hailed Japan’s gesture saying that the funds will chiefly help the country to mitigate climate change and coerce peace.
Malawi faces a number of challenges that increase its vulnerability to a changing climate, including high population growth, dependence on rainfed agriculture, high rates of malnutrition and HIV/AIDS, and inadequate power supply.
The extreme climate and weather events such as the increased frequency and intensity of drought and floods, along with higher temperatures, negatively impact agriculture production, fisheries, wildlife and forests, which provide food, income, fuel, and other environmental services to vulnerable populations.
