Chilima’s corruption case to be tried in the High Court

By Linda Kwanjana

They say that any act of misdeeds that we do always find their way to haunt us at some point.

This seems like the case with what is happening with the Vice President Saulos Chilima at the moment.

Chilima appeared before the Lilongwe Magistrate Court this morning for commencement of his corruption case. What was thought to be a misdemeanour has proved to be a felony too big to be handled by a lower court and the Magistrate has since committed the case to the Economic and Financial Crime division of the High Court.

The Vice President is suspected to have received bribes of $280 000 (K288.5 million ) and $19.5 million (K19.5 billion) from businessman Zunneth Sattar to help his company get contracts from the Malawi Defence Force and Malawi Police Services.

Chilima was charged with 6 counts bordering on abuse of office.
