President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on Thursday appealed for more support towards the district of Nsanje and all the other districts affected by Cyclone Freddy.
In his address to the nation on Thursday, March 23, the President recounted what he saw while be was aboard a plane that took him to three camps cut off from land in the district.
Said the President: “The district of Nsanje is in big trouble. After failing to travel there last week because the road had been damaged by Cyclone Freddy, I was finally able to visit three sites there by helicopter today. What I saw from the air and what I saw on the ground were very painful scenes.
“From the air, I saw large swathes of land covered in flood waters going as far as the eye could see, as if we were flying over a marshy and muddy portion of the sea, with no sign that there were homes and roads there just two weeks ago.”
President Chakwera also commended the gesture shown by former Presidents Dr. Bakili Muluzi and Dr. Joyce Banda who had a caucus with him at Sanjika Palace and who have willingly accepted to serve as Goodwill Ambassadors in mobilising resources to help survivors of the Cyclone.
President Chakwera said he is hopeful that Former President, Professor Arthur Mutharika will reconsider to join his counterparts in the effort.
Last week President Chakwera launched the Tigwirane Manja Campaign through which be made an appeal to all Malawians, regardless of their political affiliation, to hold hands and work together to provide assistance to the people and areas affected by Cyclone Freddy.
