Chakwera up the game in Doha : urges Developed Countries to fulfill their pledges

By Staff Reporter

His Excellency the State President of the Republic of Malawi Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has asked developed countries to ensure fulfilling or delivering their promises to LDCs, stating that their assistance should not be deemed or rendered as a favour but rather a historical and moral responsibility.

Speaking in his capacity as LDCs’ Chairperson at the opening of the summit at the Doha Convention Centre in Qatar, the Malawi leader described the 5th Least Development Countries (LDCs) Summit as extremely unique, stressing that the 46-member grouping exists for the sole purpose of “ending own existence.”

Chakwera said the suffering that is shared by the poor countries under the LDCs banner requires them to embrace the Doha Programme of Action (2022-2031) which he described as an excellent and pragmatic blueprint designed to help LDCs escape such a category of poor countries.

President, Dr Chakwera is in Doha, Qatar to attend the 5th United Nations on Least Development Countries Conference which is taking place in Doha Qatar in his capacity as Global Chairperson for the grouping.

Upon arrival, the Malawi leader was welcomed by Malawi Envoy to the State of Qatar HE Roy Kachale, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo, Minister of Natural resources Dr Michael Usi and Trade Minister Simplex Chithyola as well as State of Qatar officials.

He is expected to participate in various meetings with the aim of advancing and enhancing partnerships with various world leaders and investors to discuss key areas related to Malawi’s development agenda in order to graduate into middle income country.

The President is expected to participate in a number of high-level meetings scheduled to take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre from March 4 to 9, 2023.
