The Malawi government under the leadership of President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has announced the salary increment for all civil servants by 8 percent.
Minister of Finance Sosten Gwengwe made the announcement on Thursday afternoon during presenting the 2023/24 National Budget in Parliament in Lilongwe.
The finance Minister also disclosed that the government has secured K39 billion for transport allowance for the civil servants.
Gwengwe said the current total budget for the 2023/2024 fiscal year is estimated at K3.87 trillion which is 25 percent of the GDP.
He said the budget is inline with the country’s blueprint vision 2063 with emphasis on the first ten year plan.
The minister also disclosed that the government has been engaging development partners for budget support.
He said, for instance, the World Bank will support the government with $160million while the European Union will announce its support once discussions have been concluded.
Below are the key allocations 2023/2024 budget allocations:
Recurrent budget is estimated at K2.9 trillion while development budget is estimated at K896.1 billion.
The Government will also continue implementing the Affordable Inputs Program.
The budget for the Affordable Inputs Program from K109 billion to K117billion.
K12 billion has been allocated for purchasing of maize by Admarc and NFRA.
Apart from K6 billion for restructuring of Admarc , K4 billion has also been allocated to Admarc for its operations.
The government has allocated an initial K5 billion for construction of Mombera University in Mzimba.
The health sector has been allocated K330.1billion.
The Transport and Infrastructure sector has been allocated K246.29 billion.
The energy sector has been allocated K51.83billion.
Education Sector: K603.3 billion to cater for salaries, wages and other operations.
Agriculture sector: K455.1 billion.
Health sector: K339.18 billion.
Local Councils have been allocated K488.09 billion.
