Malawi joined the global community on Saturday to commemorate Autism Awareness Day, with activities held in Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu to raise awareness and promote acceptance of individuals with autism. The events, held under the theme “Celebrating the Difference,” brought together families, educators, government officials, medical professionals, and community leaders to promote understanding and inclusion of individuals with autism.

In Blantyre, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital hosted a vibrant event that showcased the talents and abilities of individuals with autism.

The event provided a platform for families and caregivers to share their experiences and challenges, and for stakeholders to discuss ways to support individuals with autism.

One of the parents present during the event emphasized that having autism is not something to be ashamed of, and called for greater efforts to ensure that children with autism are fully included and supported in society.

“We need to create a society that values and accepts individuals with autism, and provides them with the support and resources they need to thrive,” said the parent.

Despite the challenges associated with autism, many individuals with the condition have unique talents and abilities that can be nurtured and developed with the right support.
