The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) has identified over 200 talented netball players through a scouting exercise aimed at building a strong national netball team.

The first cohort of 80 players has completed a week-long camp at the Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe, marking a significant step towards achieving the association’s goal.

According to NAM General Secretary Yamikani Kauma, the scouting exercise is part of a broader strategy to develop a competitive national team.

“We have been targeting girls who are not less than 1.7 meters tall, and the age bracket is 15-24 years,” Kauma said, adding that, “We want players who can play for many years.”

The camp at BNS provided an opportunity for the selected players to showcase their skills and work on their game under the guidance of experienced coaches. Kauma expressed gratitude to Nico Group of Companies, which has provided funding for the exercise.

“Everything from transportation, food, accommodation, has been financed by Nico Group of Companies,” she said, adding that, “We are really grateful for the financial support they are giving us.”

The scouting exercise is a crucial step in building a strong national team that can compete effectively at the international level.

The association plans to organize another camp for the remaining players during the school holidays, as most of the identified players are currently in school.
