Timothy Mtambo Will Be a Welcome Addition to Malawi Parliament

By Wadza Botomani
Recent reports indicate that former Cabinet Minister and human rights activist Timothy Mtambo will contest for the Chitipa Central parliamentary seat in the upcoming elections. If successful, his entry into the National Assembly would be a significant boost for Malawi’s democracy. Mtambo is a brilliant mind, a courageous leader, and a powerful voice for the people—qualities that are sorely needed in our legislature today.
There is no doubt that Mtambo possesses a sharp intellect and the ability to articulate policies effectively. His background as a civil rights leader demonstrates his capacity for critical thinking and problem-solving. In a Parliament often criticized for lacking substantive debate, his presence would elevate discussions on national issues, ensuring that laws and policies are scrutinized with the seriousness they deserve.

More importantly, Mtambo is a man of courage. His leadership of the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) during the turbulent 2019-2020 protests was instrumental in holding the corrupt DPP-led government accountable. At great personal risk, he stood firm in demanding justice and electoral integrity, proving his unwavering commitment to Malawi’s democracy. That bravery is exactly what our Parliament needs—leaders who will not cower in the face of oppression or compromise their principles for political expediency.
Some critics have unfairly labeled Mtambo a “betrayer” for joining the Tonse Alliance government, claiming he abandoned the fight for justice. This accusation is misplaced. Like any reformist, Mtambo hoped for genuine change and worked within the system to push for it. He was not the ultimate decision-maker in that administration, and blaming him for its failures ignores the complexities of coalition politics. His intentions were noble, and his record shows he has never betrayed Malawians.
Malawi’s Parliament needs strong, independent voices like Mtambo’s—leaders who can challenge the status quo and advocate for real transformation. Additionally, as a youthful and dynamic politician, he represents a new generation of leadership that prioritizes accountability and progressive ideals.
If elected, Timothy Mtambo will bring much-needed energy, integrity, and boldness to the National Assembly. Chitipa Central—and Malawi as a whole—would benefit greatly from his representation.
