Malawi robotics challenge showcases Youth innovation

The first-ever Malawi Robotics for Good Youth National Challenge has kicked off, bringing together 63 young participants from schools and universities to showcase their robotics skills.

The competition, themed around earthquake disaster relief, aims to promote innovation and technological solutions to real-world problems.

Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Rachel Chimbwete Phiri, praised UN Women and its partners for implementing the Malawi Girls Can Code Too project, saying it highlights the transformative power of technology and innovation.

“This initiative has the potential to provide innovative solutions to help mitigate the impact of climate change,” she said.

UN Women Resident Representative, Letty Chiwara, commended the government for investing in youth technological skills, emphasizing that technology drives innovation, economic growth, and global progress.

The young participants built robots equipped with sensors to locate survivors and deliver crucial information to aid rescue efforts, demonstrating their potential to make a positive impact.
