Global mourning as Pope Francis dies at 88: Former President Mutharika pays tribute to a moral giant

By Burnett Munthali

Former Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has joined global leaders and millions of Catholic faithful in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away in the early morning hours of April 21, 2025.

In a heartfelt message shared on his official Facebook page, Mutharika described the late pontiff as “a global icon of peace, justice, and unity,” whose departure has left a profound void within the Catholic Church and beyond.

In his post, Mutharika reflected on the far-reaching impact of Pope Francis’ leadership, emphasizing his legacy of humility and compassion.

“Pope Francis exemplified humility and leaves an indelible mark of compassion, tolerance, and advocacy for the poor and marginalized, prioritizing moral wealth over material gain,” Mutharika wrote.

These words echo the sentiments of many who regarded Francis as a pope who redefined the papacy with simplicity and sincerity.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope.

Since his election in 2013, he became a transformative figure in the Catholic Church, navigating complex global challenges with a pastoral approach grounded in mercy, justice, and inclusivity.

Mutharika, a devout Catholic himself, acknowledged the spiritual strength Pope Francis imparted to the world, describing him as a man who continuously reminded humanity of “the transformative power of love, forgiveness, and inclusivity.”

Under Pope Francis’ leadership, the Catholic Church saw renewed focus on social justice, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue.

He championed the rights of refugees, the poor, and victims of war, often calling for global cooperation to confront climate change and economic inequality.

His encyclicals and public addresses carried moral authority that transcended religious boundaries.

Mutharika’s tribute also extended condolences to the global Catholic community on behalf of himself and his wife, Madame Gertrude Mutharika.

“Madame Gertrude and I, extend our heartfelt condolences to the global Catholic community,” he said.

“May Pope Francis’ soul rest in the eternal peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The message resonated with many Malawians who respected Pope Francis for his stance on moral clarity and his concern for Africa’s social and economic challenges.

The death of Pope Francis marks the end of an era in the Catholic Church.

His leadership was not without controversy, particularly as he sought to reform entrenched systems within the Vatican.

Yet, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the Gospel and its call to love and serve the least among us.

As preparations begin for a papal conclave and millions prepare for memorial masses worldwide, Pope Francis’ legacy will endure in the hearts of the faithful.

His papacy, defined by its humanity and hope, will continue to inspire both the Church and global society.

Pope Francis’ death is not just a loss for Catholics but for the entire world that yearned for moral leadership in tumultuous times.

As Mutharika and other world leaders honor his memory, the question now turns to the future of the Church and the continuation of his mission of love and justice in a fractured world.
