By Burnett Munthali

On Friday, 14 February 2025, a large crowd of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters gathered outside the Parliament Building in Lilongwe as President Lazarus Chakwera delivered the State of the Nation Address (SONA). The supporters, eager to hear their leader’s speech, followed the proceedings through megaphone speakers strategically placed around the premises.

The atmosphere outside Parliament was filled with energy as party loyalists dressed in MCP colors waved flags, sang songs, and chanted slogans in support of the President. Some carried banners praising Chakwera’s leadership, while others engaged in discussions about the key points of the address.

Security officers were present to maintain order and ensure that the gathering remained peaceful. Despite the large turnout, there were no reports of violence or disruptions. Vendors took advantage of the occasion, selling food, drinks, and party regalia to the enthusiastic crowd.

As the President outlined his administration’s achievements and future plans, supporters reacted with cheers and applause whenever he mentioned key development projects. However, not everyone in the crowd was entirely satisfied. Some murmured concerns about unfulfilled promises, rising costs of living, and the slow pace of economic recovery.

Throughout the speech, the megaphone speakers broadcasted Chakwera’s words clearly, allowing those outside Parliament to stay informed. Some supporters debated policy issues, with die-hard MCP loyalists defending the government’s progress, while others expressed frustrations over challenges such as food insecurity, fuel shortages, and job creation.

As the address came to an end, the supporters slowly dispersed, still engaged in discussions about what they had heard. While some remained hopeful about Chakwera’s vision for the country, others left with lingering doubts about whether the government would truly deliver on its promises. The gathering outside Parliament reflected the mixed sentiments among Malawians—loyalty from some, skepticism from others, and a shared desire for a better future.
