Does Usi have anything up his sleeves?

By Pemphero Mpho Musowa

The political arena is hands akimbo waiting to see what former United Transformation Movement (UTM) President Michael Usi has up his sleeves following expulsion from the party.

Usi, who took over when party founder Saulos Chilima suddenly died in a plane crash has been at logger heads with the leadership.

He has accused the politburo of not being constitutional not eligible to make decisions.

His expulsion, seen as the last resolve to the uncanty rudeness when he openly supported the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) when he chanted the slogan “Boma ndilomweli” gave his hand on where his allegalence stood.

State President Lazarus Chakwera and MCP leader appointed Usi as his Vice president and has clocked six months but his tenure has been marred with back and forth with his now ousted party.

Usi has acknowledged being communicated of his expulsion but his silence has kept people wondering.

His not so subtle Facebook page post before the announcement that no one can take him out of the party, now leaves questions as to what will his next move be since he doesn’t recognise the authority of those who have fired him.

Social political commentator Evison Nkhoma says Usi has two choices: “he has to either join MCP quickly or form his own party. There are two things to expect here.”

1. If he joins MCP he’s safer but will soon lose many benefits as MCP will start positioning their runningmate for visibility. The main duty of Usi was to destroy UTM which he has failed.

2. Forming his own party will see Usi getting sidelined and will soon be at loggerheads with the notorious MCP on the account that Usi has no people as all he has been staging have been from MCP. It has always been packaging nothing real, forming his own party that would mean he’s taking people from MCP.

On his court route as Kondwani Nankhumwa, the stooge who was ousted from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) took, Nkhoma says: “This would extend from sabotaging his political career to bankruptcy. It’s difficult to win a case against the democratically elected leadership of a party.”

He points out: “He can go many miles but the last judgement will ask Usi to pay all legal fees to UTM which will be too huge. He should leave everything concerning UTM like nothing happened to protect the bag and embrace every treatment from MCP. Ask Nankhumwa it’s the same sad song.”
