Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) announces extended voting deadline for leadership elections

By Burnett Munthali

The Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) party has reported that nearly 1,000 members have already cast their votes in the ongoing leadership elections, with the final day for voting originally set for December 6. However, the party has decided to extend the voting period until December 31, allowing more people to participate.

MMD leader Peter Kuwani announced the extension, emphasizing the party’s desire to give more members the opportunity to have their say in the leadership election. Despite this extension, Kuwani expressed satisfaction with the current voter turnout.

“We are pleased with the number of votes cast so far. However, we want to ensure that as many members as possible can participate in this important process,” said Kuwani.

He also took the opportunity to clarify that MMD is not engaging in any tactics to manipulate the election process, unlike some other political parties that have been accused of holding rallies to sway voters. Kuwani affirmed that the MMD has always maintained transparency and fairness in its elections.

The leadership elections are for approximately 50 party positions, with candidates vying for key roles within the party. Notably, MMD is the only party conducting its leadership elections online, utilizing internet-based systems to ensure broad participation from its members across the country.

This move highlights MMD’s commitment to democratic processes and transparency as the party works towards strengthening its leadership and increasing its influence in Malawi’s political landscape.
