MOAM assures Malawians: Transport fare hike is temporary
By Burnett Munthali
The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (MOAM) has clarified that the recent increase in transport fares is a temporary measure, assuring the public that fares will return to normal once the current fuel crisis is resolved.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, MOAM General Secretary Coaxley Kamange urged the public to remain patient and understanding during this challenging period. He explained that the fare adjustments were necessary due to the ongoing scarcity of fuel, which has significantly affected operational costs for transport providers.
“The fuel crisis has forced us to adjust fares to sustain operations. However, this is not a permanent hike. We are committed to returning to the normal fare structure as soon as the fuel situation stabilizes,” Kamange said.
The country has been grappling with a persistent fuel shortage, leading to long queues at filling stations and disruptions in various sectors, including transportation. The fare increase has sparked frustration among commuters, who are already burdened by the rising cost of living.
Kamange emphasized that MOAM understands the difficulties faced by the public and is actively monitoring the situation. He called on authorities and stakeholders to expedite efforts to resolve the fuel crisis, which he said is at the heart of the challenges facing the transport sector.
“We empathize with commuters and share their frustrations. We are hopeful that the government and relevant stakeholders will address this fuel shortage soon to alleviate the burden on everyone,” he added.
Meanwhile, MOAM has urged minibus operators to remain fair and reasonable in their pricing to avoid exploiting passengers during this period.
As the nation waits for a resolution to the fuel crisis, the assurance from MOAM offers a glimmer of hope that transport fares will soon normalize, bringing relief to thousands of Malawians who rely on minibuses for their daily commutes.
