Human rights activist Undule Mwakasungula has issued a strong call to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to engage communities on the importance of registering to vote in the upcoming 2025 General Elections. His statement comes as the first phase of the national voter registration process has commenced, marking a significant step toward ensuring that all eligible citizens can exercise their democratic rights.
Mwakasungula emphasized that this voter registration period presents a crucial opportunity for citizens to participate actively in shaping their government. “It is essential for all eligible citizens to ensure they are registered so they can have a say in the leadership of the country,” he stated, underscoring the vital role that civic engagement plays in a functioning democracy.
In response to Mwakasungula’s call, Kinear Mlowoka, the Programmes Manager for Phunzirani Development Organisation, shared that their organization has formed a consortium of CSOs aimed at enhancing mass awareness around voter registration. “We have used various channels, including churches, mobile vans, and traditional leaders, to reach every corner of our communities,” Mlowoka explained, highlighting their commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in this critical exercise.
The first phase of voter registration is set to conclude on November 3, 2024, and CSOs are working diligently to ensure that citizens understand the importance of this process. As the nation approaches the elections, the collaboration between activists, organizations, and community leaders will be crucial in fostering an informed and engaged electorate.
