By Burnett Munthali

In a significant political shift, approximately 200 members from the United Democratic Front (UDF) and United Transformation Movement (UTM) have officially joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in Mangochi today. The move is seen as a major boost for the DPP as it strengthens its presence in the region.

The DPP’s Eastern Region Governor, Hon. Daud Chikwanje, welcomed the new members during a ceremony held in Mangochi Municipal. Among those joining were prominent figures like Mr. Zimbabwe, the UDF Governor, and Ms. Hamida Ali, the UTM Constituency Governor for Mkungulu.

In his remarks, Chikwanje emphasized that the doors of the DPP remain open for anyone who wants to return to the party, which he described as having a clear vision for Malawi under the leadership of former President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika. “The time has come for you to return to your visionary party, DPP,” Chikwanje stated.

Mr. Zimbabwe, speaking on behalf of the new members, expressed his excitement about rejoining the DPP, saying, “We are here to work with the DPP with the aim of regaining power. We were lost, but now we have returned home, and Prof. Mutharika has warmly welcomed us.”

Chikwanje’s appointment as the DPP’s Governor for the Eastern Region has already brought significant changes in a short period, with many expecting further positive developments in the area.

This mass defection signals the growing influence of the DPP in Mangochi, as the party gears up for the 2025 General Elections.
