Kalua calls for free secondary education in Malawi
By Chisomo Phiri
Legislator for Rumphi East, Kamlepo Kalua, has urged the Government to implement free education in secondary schools in the country, citing economic hardships that are preventing many from paying school fees.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday,Kalua argued that this move would help alleviate the financial burden on families and ensure that all students have access to quality education.
He pointed out that other countries have successfully implemented free secondary education, and Malawi should follow suit.
In response, Deputy Minister of Education Nancy Chaola Mdooko, said while the request is well-intentioned, the government cannot implement free education in secondary schools due to resource constraints.
Mdooko assured the House that the Ministry of Education is exploring alternative measures to support students struggling to pay school fees in secondary schools.
She emphasized the government’s commitment to making education accessible to all, while also acknowledging the need for sustainable and feasible solutions.
