Tensions Escalate in Parliament Over Aircraft Crash Report

By Burnett Munthali

Tensions erupted in Parliament on Friday as the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) demanded the release of the investigation report on the plane crash that killed Vice President Saulos Chilima. The crash, which occurred on June 10, 2024, claimed the lives of Chilima and eight others onboard.

Dr. George Chaponda, the leader of the opposition, called for the presentation of the findings from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) to the house. Chaponda argued that the report is crucial for understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident and ensuring transparency.

However, Jacob Hara, the chief whip for the government side, responded that the government could not comment on or present the preliminary report due to its being conducted by a foreign agency. This explanation was met with frustration by some lawmakers, including Shadreck Namalomba, the Member of Parliament for Mangochi South West. Namalomba insisted that the matter was of national importance and required immediate discussion.

In an interview with MIJ Online, Namalomba claimed he was being intimidated for his outspoken position on making the report public. “I would also want to know what caused the aircraft crash. Of course, I am also under threats. Let me tell you I am under threats; anything can happen,” he stated.

Richard Chimwendo Banda, the leader of the house, chose not to address the controversy directly but noted that the first week of August had been marked by significant political ups and downs. This included a recent walkout by DPP members over parliamentary recommendations regarding fuel price adjustments proposed by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.

The call for the aircraft crash report and the subsequent parliamentary tensions highlight the broader issues of transparency and accountability facing the Malawian government.
