President Lazarus Chakwera Announces Major Solar Farm Initiative
By Burnett Munthali
President Lazarus Chakwera has shared promising news with Malawians from Berlin. In his recent Facebook update, he announced a significant step forward in enhancing Malawi’s power supply infrastructure.
Last evening, President Chakwera signed a memorandum of understanding that will pave the way for the construction of a 50-megawatt solar farm in Choma, Mzuzu. This agreement was finalized during a working dinner with the Rethinking Africa Foundation, a German initiative committed to advancing African development through innovative and sustainable approaches.
The solar farm will be developed by Sun Africa Power Development Limited, which is investing 70 million Euros into the 80-hectare project. The initiative promises to create over 100 jobs during construction and sustain around 80 jobs annually for the next 25 years.
This solar farm aligns with Malawi’s ambitious goal of increasing the national grid capacity by 1,000 megawatts by 2025. It represents a crucial step towards a greener, more reliable energy future, marking a significant investment in clean energy that will support the country’s productivity and economic growth.
