Ministry of education hails early grade numeracy reform as game-changer

By Chisomo Phiri

The Ministry of Education says the Early Grade Numeracy Reform program is crucial in improving the mathematics subject among learners in primary schools.

The program’s coordinator in the ministry, Caroline Chiphinga Mwale, made the remarks in Balaka district on Saturday during the closing of a three-day training of Master Trainers.

Mwale said the program helps teachers and learners understand the mathematics subject without any challenges.

“This approach is crucial as it improves learners’ understanding of mathematics subjects while they are in lower grades,” she said.

One of the participants, Olipa Jassi from Namilongo Primary School in Zomba district, described the new reform program training as timely, looking at how some learners find it difficult to understand the subject.

Jassi hoped the program will improve the education system among students.

The Early Grade Numeracy Reform program was launched in 2021 and aims to set a strong foundation for learners in classes from Standard 1-4.
