The Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) has launched an investigation into the missing map in the 2024 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) Geography Paper 1, which was administered on Tuesday.

The map, which was intended to accompany a question on the paper, was not enclosed with the question papers during packaging.

In a statement, MANEB Executive Director Dorothy Nampota says the investigation aims to identify the source of the problem.

She indicates that the matter was addressed administratively after it was reported, and the examination was successfully conducted nationwide.

“Similar administrative measures will be taken during marking and subsequent processes, following guidelines for handling such instances, which were duly approved by the MANEB Board of Directors,”reads the statement in part.

According to Nampota, the question was worth 35 marks, and the entire paper was scored out of 110 marks.

Meanwhile, Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) Executive Director Benedicto Kondowe has criticized the incident as a clear indication of inadequate planning and lack of due diligence in examination preparation.

A total of 184,978 candidates are sitting for this year’s MSCE examinations, which began on July 2 and will conclude on July 26, 2024.
