Experts advocate for boosting food processing of underutilised crops to enhance exports

By Burnett Munthali

Experts have called on the Malawian government and various organizations to explore food processing opportunities for underutilized crops like sorghum and millet, aiming to enhance the country’s export capabilities. This recommendation was highlighted during the 12th Eminent Speakers Series held in Lilongwe.

Professor Andy Dougill from the University of York emphasized the importance of leveraging these underutilized crops, which have significant potential for value addition. He argued that processing these crops could not only diversify Malawi’s export portfolio but also improve economic returns from agriculture.

Minister of Trade and Industry Sosten Gwengwe echoed this sentiment, advocating for deliberate measures to bolster the local manufacturing sector. He pointed out that most of Malawi’s exports currently consist of low-value products, which provide minimal economic benefits. Gwengwe stressed that increasing the export of value-added products is essential for maximizing economic returns and fostering industrial growth.

Additionally, Dr. Thomas Munthali, Director General of the National Planning Commission (NPC), highlighted the urgent need for import substitution strategies in the food sector. He noted that Malawi’s dependency on imports has surged to nearly 80% of goods, a stark contrast to 18% in the 1990s. This growing import reliance underscores the need for local production and processing to reduce the country’s vulnerability to external economic pressures.

The call to action from these experts reflects a broader strategy aimed at strengthening Malawi’s economic resilience and self-sufficiency. By focusing on the processing of underutilized crops and implementing policies that support local manufacturing, the country can enhance its export potential, create job opportunities, and improve overall economic stability.

As Malawi continues to navigate its economic challenges, the insights from this Eminent Speakers Series offer a roadmap for strategic development in agriculture and manufacturing. The adoption of these recommendations could play a crucial role in shaping the future economic landscape of Malawi.
