President Lazarus Chakwera leads nation in farewell to Lucius Banda

Malawi prepares to bid a heartfelt farewell to the late music icon and politician, Lucius Banda, with President Lazarus Chakwera set to lead the nation in mourning. Banda, fondly known as ‘Soldier,’ passed away on Sunday while receiving treatment for kidney failure in South Africa. His return to Malawi yesterday via Chileka International Airport marked the beginning of a somber procession to honor his life and legacy.
Upon arrival, Lucius Banda’s body was received at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, where a public viewing ceremony allowed Malawians from all walks of life to pay their respects to the beloved artist. The solemn procession then continued to Balaka, where Kaumphawi village hosted a Requiem Mass. This gathering served as a poignant tribute to Banda, reflecting on his profound impact both as an artist and as President Chakwera’s Advisor on Youth and Arts.

On Wednesday July 3, 2024 concurrently with these events, a Requiem Mass led by Rt Rev Bishop Peter Musikuwa of Chikwawa Diocese was underway at Banda’s residence in Balaka. This ceremony provided an opportunity for close friends, family members, and fans to gather and bid their final farewells to the departed legend.
The final journey for Lucius Banda will culminate Thursday July 4 , 2024 with his burial in his ancestral village of Sosola, located in Balaka district. This momentous occasion not only marks the end of an era but also celebrates the enduring legacy of a man who left an indelible mark on Malawian music, politics, and society.
As Malawi mourns the loss of Lucius Banda, the nation reflects on his contributions as a passionate advocate, a talented musician, and a dedicated public servant.
