Poem – When you die

By Burnett Munthali

When you die, soldier, what tales will they tell?
Of battles fought bravely, of songs that compel?
In the fields of your homeland, where echoes still ring,
Your courage and melody forever will sing.

Through dust and through danger, you marched with a stride,
A warrior’s heart, and a poet’s deep pride.
Your voice was your weapon, your lyrics, your shield,
In every verse, a nation healed.

When you die, soldier, your spirit lives on,
In the hearts of the people whose lives you have drawn.
A legacy woven in music and might,
In memories cherished, in songs of the night.

For soldiers like you, the brave and the true,
Your sacrifice remembered, your valor in view.
When you die, soldier, the heavens will weep,
But your anthem of freedom eternally keeps.

Rest now, dear Lucius, in the arms of the sky,
Your journey may end, but your legacy flies high.
In the tapestry woven with honor and grace,
Your name lives forever, a hero’s embrace.
