Malawi’s Asimenye Simwaka Secures Bronze in African Athletics Championship

Asimenye Simwaka, Malawi’s talented short-distance runner, clinched the bronze medal in the 200-meter event at the African Senior Athletics Championship held in Cameroon. Despite her impressive performance, Simwaka narrowly missed the Olympic qualifying time of 22.80 seconds, finishing with a commendable time of 23.05 seconds in the final.

The gold and silver medals were secured by Ivorian athletes Jessika Lauren Maca Gbai and Maboundou Kone, who clocked 22.84 and 22.99 seconds, respectively.

Simwaka, a 26-year-old athlete from the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), demonstrated exceptional form throughout the competition. She shattered her personal and national records twice on her way to the final, raising hopes for Malawi’s potential historic qualification for the Olympics.

Earlier heats saw Simwaka dominate, topping her heat with a time of 23.01 seconds, surpassing her previous record of 23.16 seconds. In the semifinals, she achieved a new personal best of 22.91 seconds, coming remarkably close to the Olympic qualifying mark by just 11 milliseconds.

Simwaka’s achievements not only underscore her individual prowess but also highlight the growing strength of Malawi’s athletics on the continental stage. Her performance serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes and a testament to dedication and perseverance in pursuit of sporting excellence.
