Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kunkuyu, has said President Lazarus Chakwera has called on for a thorough investigation on the cause of the Aircraft accident that claimed the life of Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima and 8 others.
Kunkuyu said this when he addressed the members of the press on Tuesday in Lilongwe.
Kunkuyu has disclosed that President Lazarus Chakwera is seeking assistance from international partners and well-wishers to conduct an independent inquiry into the plane crash that resulted in the tragic deaths of Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and eight others.
The Minister made the remarks during a press briefing held at the Office of the President and Cabinet in Lilongwe.
Kunkuyu said the President would like to have a comprehensive understanding of the events at Chikangawa in Mzimba, emphasising that this approach will enhance transparency and accountability.
The Minister stated that consultations are underway with partners who will support government with independent investigations, into what caused the plane crash
He emphasised President Chakwera’s role as a unifying figure for all Malawians and urged those who may have experienced a sense of loss from Dr Chilima’s absence to view the President as a unifying father figure.
Kunkuyu also praised the media for their accurate reporting during the funeral procession, citing its positive impact on fostering peace in the country.
Additionally, Kunkuyu disclosed that President Chakwera will not attend the inauguration ceremony of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa instead, he has delegated Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nancy Tembo, to represent him.
He expressed his gratitude to Malawians, foreign governments and organisations, Police, Malawi Defence Force, the Roman Catholic Church, Airtel Malawi, Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) and the media for their unwavering commitment and dedication during the funeral ceremony of the Vice President and eight others.
