By Chisomo Phiri
The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) has on Friday suspended its 16 warders for allegedly conniving with prisoners to dupe people money through digital platforms.
MPS Deputy Commissioner Bazilio Chapuwala, confirmed the development with local media.
Chapuwala said the move follows independent investigations which his office conducted.
He said they have now introduced body scanners to address high levels of fraud among prisoners in the country’s prisons.
In his comment,Human rights activist Michael Kaiyatsa, commended the decision by MPS.
He then called for the prosecution of the suspended officers.
According to Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA),mobile fraud across digital platforms is at K120 million every month, a thing described as a stumbling block to the growth of the country’s digital economy.
