By Chisomo Phiri

Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire has warned that he will summon Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officials over reports that some soldiers at Chilumba Barracks roadblock in Karonga assault drivers who ferry farm produce to and from the district.

Mkandawire said on Wednesday that he has received numerous complaints on the conduct of the soldiers and condemned the assault allegations.

The minister pointed out that the roadblock was erected to deal with tax evaders and illegal immigrants, adding that the soldiers have also been tasked with checking against exportation of farm produce to neighbouring countries.

On the same matter, a group of concerned people in the district, led by Lyton Mangochi, has threatened to stop paying tax from July 1, 2023 as a means of forcing responsible offices to move the roadblock to an area called Pusi, which is closer to the border.
