Chakwera condoles families of Nsanje-Phokera canoe accident

President Dr. Lazarus Maccathy Chakwera has sent a message of condolence to the families whose relations are still missing following the water accident which occurred at Phokera in Nsanje district.

Delivering the message from the president, Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Mia, said Dr. Chakwera is deeply saddened with the accident and has provided 2 million kwacha and coffins to the affected families.

On Monday this week, at least 37 people were involved in the canoe accident at Phokera Dock in Nsanje district while they tried to cross the Shire river to the neighbouring Mozambique for farming activities.



Following the accident, 13 people were rescued, one was confirmed dead while 23 are still missing.

As search and rescue mission is in progress, Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje constituency, Gladys Ganda, has asked the government to relocate the hippos who have been causing havoc around the area of Traditional Authority Mbenje in Nsanje.

It is said that the Phokera water accident has been caused by a hippopotamus which hit the canoe while they were on transit.
