Bushiri adopts 8 Cyclone Freddy camps in Mulanje: pledges for more support

By Chisomo Phiri

Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has pledged to adopt eight camps at Namulenga in Mulanje West Constituency where he will support survivors with basic necessities including giving them finances to rebuild their lives as they go back to their respective homes.

Bushiri disclosed this in an interview with local media on Saturday when he visited the constituency to appreciate the damage that the cyclone has caused.

The leader of Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG)-The Jesus Nation, also disclosed that he has hired a helicopter that will help in reaching out to the victims, especially those that are in areas where the roads have been cut off.

“It is so shocking to hear that over 600 households have been cut out from the rest, they are in camps going hungry and sleeping in the cold because they can’t be reached.

“I have hired a helicopter which will start airlifting all the relief materials needed to the camps.

“Further, I will also be assisting with financial capacity to every household to help them move from the camps and start new life,”said the man of God.

District Commissioner for Mulanje, David Kayiwonanga Gondwe hailed Bushiri for taking the adopt the camp strategy, something he said eases the stress his office has to help over 19000 households affected disasters in the district.

Member of Parliament for the area Yusuf Nthenda also hailed Bushiri for the kind gesture.

He urged other well-wishers to emulate what Bushiri has done as over 1,000 families have been affected in his constituency.

“We need all the support we can get, the people here need food, shelter and other household items. Namulenga has now become an island and the helicopter will be of great help to assist the affected people,” Nthenda said.

Mulanje is said to be one of the worst hit districts by Cylone Freddy where 135 deaths have been confirmed and about 200 are missing while 2800 have been displaced.
