Chakwera declares 14 days of mourning those died of Cyclone Freddy

President Lazarus Chakwera has today declared 14 days of national mourning in the wake of the disaster that has claimed more than 200 lives in the Southern Region of the country.

In his national address this evening, the servant Malawi leader says it is important that all those who lost their lives are buried with dignity and that all those missing are accounted for.

The President has also expressed his wish to see that all the survivors of the disaster are reached with all the basic necessities.



Chakwera also disclosed that he convened a Cabinet meeting for the approval of K1.6 billion to help in dealing with the impact of the disaster.

The president has also ordered that flags should fly at half mast for 7 out of 14 days.

“I have directed that all of us observe 14 days of mourning and that flags fly at half mast for the first seven days,” says the president.
