Chakwera relieves DPP’s Kayuni of his duty over unsound judgment

By Chisomo Phiri

In what can be described as good leadership,President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday January 18,2023 fired Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Steve Kayuni for allegedly being found using unsound judgement to use public office to settle a personal injury.

Kayuni’s removal follows the arrest of the Director General for the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Martha Chizuma.

However, Chakwera, announced Masauko Chamkakala as the new DPP Director.

In his presidential national address on ” commission of inquiry ” from Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe acknowledged the leaked audio still undermines ACB fight against corruption as well as the inter-agency corporation.

The President said he stands by his decision to stand by Chizuma and to not fire her over her leaked but this does not mean that he will stop anyone to file a complaint against Chizuma over the leaked audio because that would be unconstitutional.

The Malawi leader said the commission found no evidence that any member of Chakwera’s cabinet ordered the arrest of Chizuma or knew about the arrest before Chizuma was arrested.

He said that if anyone has evidence that anyone appointed by Chakwera knew about the arrest or ordered the arrest, they should send the evidence to Chakwera’s office.

Chakwera concluded his long address by directing that in the next few weeks, the SPC Colleen Zamba will bring the heads of the organizations to work on a framework.
