By Staff Reporter

The High Court in Blantyre has sentenced a Police officer Andrew Chagaga to 30 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour for raping twice a Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) student.

In his ruling on Tuesday, High Court Judge Vikochi Chima observed that the police officer failed in his duty as someone entrusted to protect and safeguard the safety of citizens.

According to the ruling, the conduct of the officer inflicted a serious invasion of the right to privacy as well as human dignity to the victim, hence the sentence. Court records indicate that the law enforcer committed the crime in 2020 while the student was in custody at Limbe Police Station in Blantyre.

The matter was committed to the High Court from the Magistrate Court after the State prayed for a stiffer punishment. Last year, Lawyer Chikondi Chijozi, who co-prosecuted the case, said the cop’s conviction showed that no one, not even a gun-brandishing police officer is above the law
