Northern Region-based TNM Super League side Karonga United has finally signed former Mighty Wanderers centre-back Eric Atsigah on a one-year deal.
Karonga United Chairperson Mathews Tulombolombo said the club had also signed three other players including Nigerian Benjamini Okoto.
Tulombolombo said they want to beef up the squad with eight players in readiness for the resumption of the season.
“This is work in progress. We are working hard to come up with a well-balanced team. We have signed Atsigah and we are happy to have him here. A Nigerian player has also joined us and things are looking good,” he said.
Tulombolombo said they had also signed Juwado Awusi from Kamuzu Barracks and Chitipa United’s Muhammad Baison.
“The players have signed one-year contracts. We are hopeful that with the arrival of these players, we will see a changed Karonga United. We were worried with the results we were getting, so I am sure these players will make a difference. They know why they are here,” he said.
Atsigah’s manager Zachariah Nyirenda confirmed that the player was in the lakeshore district.
“Yes it is true that Atsigah is at Karonga United but we are still talking. What I do not want is for him to sign a long contract. Karonga have said they want him up to the end of the season and we will take it from there,” Nyirenda said.
Last week, Karonga also announced the hiring of former Mighty Wanderers assistant coach Oscar Kaunda in the same capacity.
Kaunda parted ways with Wanderers about a fortnight ago, saying he needed to relocate to Karonga to take care of his ill mother.
The development means Kaunda has now reunited with Atsigah after working together at Wanderers.
Atsigah did not play any competitive match at the Lali Lubani Road side as the club was failing to secure him a work permit.
He terminated his contract about three weeks ago, claiming that Wanderers were failing to meet contractual obligations.
Reports initially indicated that he would fly back to his home country of Ghana.
